Sub Zero Vodka Bar - Meeting #53

October 2nd, 2013

308 North Euclid Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63108
(314) 367-1200

In Attendance:
Doug E. Fresh, NB, JC, Two Napkins (w/ Mario Burger & Olivia), Homey 1 Kanobi, Beat Meat, The Awesome One, Hamburgler, Beaner, "7", S, kt, Yoga Foodie, 1/2 Pound Curler, and Zanzibar McFarlane

NB finally discovered a Burger Joint she loves!
NB even ordered a legit BURGER (Salmon Burger)

Two Napkins & Olivia (wearing HIGH heels!)
Beat Meat & his mama The Awesome One

After ordering, I discovered that you can add a Bacon Bun to your burger... that wouldn't have gone well with mine, so I asked Kelly to bring out a few buns toasted, with spicy cheese sauce... this was a brilliant idea.

It took TWO pictures to fit in all the burgers!
More Delicoius Burgers!

NB & JC's Sashimitini... So pretty!

Doug E. Fresh's Bourbon BBQ Burger
S's BBQ Boursin Burger

Another view of kt's World's Fair Burger (drooling)
kt's World's Fair Burger - Yes, it was that good.

The Classic

Olivia digs in to her burger!
Mario Burger takes a HUGE bite!

The Sushi Burger - Trust me, it's AWESOME.

How would you describe your burger?
Doug E. Fresh:  Good, but I tasted two others and they were better
NB:  Good
JC:  N/A
Two Napkins:  Perfect.  Spicy.  I was a little scared about a pretzel bun, because it can be too bready.  But the liquid cheese made it soft and just hearty enough.
Homey 1 Kanobi:  Great, but I was disappointed with the pretzel bun.
Beat Meat:  Sweet, salty
The Awesome One:  Both were impressive looking – large and full of flavor.
Hamburgler:  It was SO good.  It was like POW!!
Beaner:  Very good, Loved the thin burger, cooked to perfection… rare!!
7:  Average
S:  Original, great flavor
kt:   WOW.  This burger knocked my socks off!  It is in my top 3.  Perhaps my #1 currently!!!  I usually shy away from “messy” looking burgers, but this one caught my attention, and I am THRILLED that I ordered it!  The meat was perfect, the peppers/mushroom/onion slaw had a spicy kick to it, and the melted cheese was heavenly!  Even the pretzel bun was kick ass (which is rare as they are usually dry!).  The Salmon burger was kinda blah, but I was shocked by how much I enjoyed the Sushi Burger!  The BBQ Bourbon Burger was wayyy too dry.
Yoga Foodie:  Unique, the crunchy topping was delicious
½ Pound Curler:  Fresh Bun – touch dry.  Meat was slightly overdone.  Pretty good.
Zanzibar McFarlane:  Bland but juicy, the bun was disappointing.  I wish I had ordered the pretzel bun.

The Awesome One:  Great bar for before the meeting, great selection and great turn out!  I love CWE! (*CWE is an area in STL called the “Central West End”)

*So... if you are like me, and have only eaten the delicious sushi at Sub Zero (or... if you're like several of our BBBC members and have only enjoyed the delicious Vodka at Sub Zero) you should SERIOUSLY make a point of heading to the Central West End and ordering one of their INSANE burgers!  I am a convert!  It will be very hard for me to order only sushi when I'm eating here again!  Derek was so kind in accommodating our group of 17, and Kelly our waitress was a superstar!  Thank you SO much!

CHEERS!

Big Kid:  Loved both
One More Amy:  Perfect, light, simple.  All the right garnishments.
Carl:  Jeff Burger – Perfecto!
G-Dog:  Deliciouso!
Fitz:  Both were amazing!  The heirloom tomatoes were delicious.  The maple, apple-wood, smoked bacon on the Balaban burger was the best I’ve ever had, and I consider myself a bacon connoisseur! J
9:  Totally Awesome
Two Napkins:  (Jeff) Fresh, light, sweet, summery – A+  (House) Hearty, rich, delish, alternating taste of smoke, salt, and sweet.
Jason Looney:  Awesome
Jazzy Jeff:  Pretty damn good
The Punisher:  Grass fed ground sirloin with local tomatoes
MareBear:  I gave it to the Punisher, and ate Gipper’s!
K-Ron:  I made love to Jeff.  Via his burger.
P-Diddy:  Both delicious, both obviously handmade patties.  Bacon was delicious, heirloom tomatoes were tasty.
Beaner:  Delicious!  I loved the bacon on the Balaburger & pickle on the JeffBurger
7:  Damn good
Spinderella:  (Jeff) Light, amaz-balls-tomatoes, flavor-flav!  (House) Thick, bacon, nice buns!
kt:  The patties were a little dense for my taste, but were perfectly cooked.  (Balaburger) I had Fontina instead of goat cheese which might have been a mistake... The bun was toasted but pretty dry) and the toppings were crisp and delicious!  (Jeff) This combination of flavors was perfect!  The heirloom tomatoes and the bread & butter pickles were awesome together!
Juicy Lucy:  The Jeff was much lighter in texture than the Herbie’s burger.  I preferred the Jeff Burger because it was much lighter and the bread & butter pickle was a delicious contrast to the smokiness of the burger.

For those of you still reading... I wanted to thank Jazzy Jeff (aka:  Jeff Orbin) for hosting such a special 46th meeting of the Big Bitches Burger Club!  We had an amazing turnout, and everyone obviously loved their burgers!  I'm sure some of you readers might think that perhaps the scores were so high because Jeff (owner & chef!) was sitting at our table... but, I was there... the burgers were THAT good!  If you have never been to Herbie's, I strongly suggest stopping in and trying out their delicious burger - OH, and any of the other fantastic offerings!

Kurt:  Juicy, looked good, and cooked good

In Attendance:
Fitz, "9", Bonqui$ha, Strawberri, Lubster, KP, MareBear (&Gipper), &kt

When someone calls your restaurant and books a table for 9 for their BURGER CLUB, it would be be nice to give them a head's up if you do not serve burgers on Sunday.  Poorly handled SA.

THE SCOTTISH ARMS NOTES:

What did you order?
kt:  Well, we tried to order burgers, but apparently Sunday is the only day of the week that they do not serve them.  So much for calling ahead and making special arrangements for a group of nine people!

How would you describe your burger?
kt:  No idea.  Brunch was mediocre at best.

How delicious was it (1-10)?
kt:  ?

Was there anything memorable about the food and/or place?
kt:  There were no burgers.  Our waitress was unfriendly (I'll keep it PG for the sake of our young readers).  We did have a fantastic group of people show up, and hopefully they will join us again when there ARE BURGERS AVAILABLE.  We will not be revisiting SA.

Roughly how much was your order?
kt: Lubster was kind enough to pick up my tab.
